I must agree with your comments. RIFTS is very inconsistent and the ongoing home campaigns are also (naturally and logically) inconsistent. IMC is probably best showcased by RIFTS more than any other game I have played. I love the setting and ideas presented in the many different game books but the inconsistency is definitely a problem. There should be a standard and guidelines for dealing with many of the situations you discuss in your post. Carella based on his non-Rifts work (especially the Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG and the underlying Unisystem, as well as GURPS Voodoo and GURPS War Againt the Chtorr) and consider Phase World one of my favorite Rifts books.

And I don't think the problem is too many authors, but a lack of under the hood consistency. Weapon stats are assigned on a whim. It may be the same person's whim doing the assigning, but that doesn't mean that it's always going to be consistent. Just a simple formula to ensure that X damage at Y range is going to cost Z credits would be nice.F. Most of the characters in the RIFTS corebook start with a certain amount of credits in "black market goods." I always took the game world to be one where a whole lot of barter takes place, but the currency system is there to sort of give it an abstract value.

I think another problem is the number of different authors, each with their own take on things. I mean, CJ Carella's stuff is still controversial in RIFTS circles, because CJ Carella's RIFTS was clearly not the RIFTS of Kev himself, or of a lot of the customers.

...and, of course, all of this is made more complicated by the dearth of incomprehensible crap in the various sourcebooks. In Dinosaur Swamp, there's a rifle that does SDC damage and costs 15,000 credits.

DMWieghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03682249561077936507noreply@blogger.com
